Yesterday was my turn to cook dinner for the flat. I browsed the Web for a while, looking for recipes, and settled on a hearty vegetable stew and something rather like cornbread, which sounded delicious. The stew went off pretty well. The bread...
The problem was with the cornmeal: I couldn't find any at the supermarket. Eventually I ran into something called "corn flour". Looks about right, I thought... Turns out it's much closer to cornstarch than cornmeal. The results were more like anemic Jell-O than bread.
Amazingly, my flatmates seemed to find it edible. Phew -- not a complete failure. Next time I think I'll stick to ingredients I'm reasonably sure that I recognize.
