More information is out about the earthquake I felt the other day. Its magnitude has been confirmed at a 7.8, which I believe is tied for the second biggest ever recorded here, but it somehow caused very little damage. No injuries anywhere, and only slight property damage, despite significant aftershocks. The tsunami I mentioned did exist, but was only 17 cm high. This is amazing: lesser quakes than this one have easily leveled cities!
Let's hope New Zealand's luck, and its building code, holds up to any future tectonic strain.
